Back in the States now and, oh yeah, I already miss the sashimi and sushi. I had a dozen amberjack sushi at the JAL F lounge (thanks to OWE), thought it would be my last bit in Japan, so I was happy to have a few more pieces before we landed.
As for JAL vs. AA J class main course meals, as noted by fender, the Japanese meal is very similar now, but the western AA meal hasn't seen much change in years and no where as good as JAL's western offering. The other big difference that AA seriously falls behind compared to JAL is the anytime menu with AA providing a cold katsu sandwich which was not good whatsoever, and the pre-arrival meal (breakfast on our flight) was pretty awful with either American style breakfast of eggs and ham or a fruit plate. JAL provides ramen anytime and a solid rice meal as a pre-arrival meal.
