Matthausen in Austria is very moving and eerie ... it is in a beautiful setting near the Danube valley, like an idealic resort, yet the scene of so much suffering and heartbreak. To the credit of the Austrian government it has been preserved as a memorial that glosses over none of the facts. I was very surprised to learn that it all started with the Spanish civil war (internees were kept there from that conflict! an aspect of history that has definitely been glossed over).
