Not a long report but just a few observations which might or might not be useful to someone
Background/Cost
As a regular visitor to Thailand travelling FC I mix my journeys between Thai and Emirates depending on which operator is the cheapest. Pre-Covid, prices were in the region of £3-3500 but alas those days are long gone. This trip cost just shy of £7k which means I might have to slum it in Business in future
Heathrow
As Thai are part of the Star Alliance, I had plenty of options and historically I would head for Uniteds FC lounge but it seems that this has gone and instead they are shuffling their FC customers into the biz lounge. It's OK but nothing to shout home about. After a drink, I decided to head for the Singapore lounge which again I have used in the past and thankfully they still had their seperate FC area. This is my lounge of choice now.
On the plane
I was flying on a 777 in 1-2-1 layout and had prebooked the window seat. Cabin was fairly full but the purser told me that a lot of seats were upgrades, not sure if that was true or not
Boarding was a breeze and I was offered the complimentary Champagne. Now I'm not a great lover of bubbly but as there wasn't any access to other alcohol prior to takeoff it would have to suffice.
The seat itself was fine but not a patch on Emirates which, in my opinion offers a wider seat and bigger TV - Incidentally my TV didn't work despite the best attempts by the purser to get it up and running. As I had a laptop filled with stuff to watch this wasn't an issue.
There's a couple of points I want to add about the crew, firstly the service was impeccable, they really couldn't do enough for you to the point it was becoming a little over-bearing but that's not their fault as it's part of their training however the second point is that as the crew were Thai, the temperature in the cabin was hot enough to melt my wifes heart. I asked a few times for it to be turned down but nothing really happened. I was sweating like a rapist for most of the journey.
Dining
The Food. Oh dear what can I say. Firstly there are no menus...seriously NO MENU's people!! instead I was given a very limited amount of options verbally by the FA who defintely didn't read out the full menu to me.
The caviar was good and seared with a mother of pearl spoon - top marks but I did have to ask for a shot of Vodka which was promptly served. No biggie
I had asked for steak to be served as IMO it's usually a safe bet when flying. What I ACTUALLY received was Thai's version of a plimsoll - it really was overdone to the point I couldn't eat it. Luckily I had gorged out on 2 English breakfasts in the lounge prior.
The wine selection was limited to two reds and two whites, I opted for the red - I can't remember what they were serving but I do remember thinking that the selection was very good.
After a good few hours of midly intoxicated sleep in a seat that gave me a little backache, breakfast was served which was adequate at best but WHY THE F@@@ are they not serving decent OJ. The juice they were using is the same cheap rubbish served with a 99baht breakfast in Pattaya (haven't been there for years but I'm sure you know the drink) - This is FC for christ take, at least serve the real mccoy, not this fake crap. Anyhow a small thing but it did grate me at the time
Landing
Well, the buggies are gone which is a shame but I was met by a Thai rep and taken through to the premium lane (note, not through VIP lane anymore) and I was quickly through.
My bags were first off so it was quick exit from the airport
Summary
Thai are OK but they have cut back on the dining and its painfully clear to see. I'm paying silly money now for FC but to be fair all airlines have jacked up their prices. Having flown Emirates a few months earlier there is a big gulf between the airlines and I fear it will get worse. I like Thai, always have done but they need to give their FC customers a little more TLC. I've just booked a ticket for August for a bargaiin price of £5200!!! It pains me to say this as I know that Thai are in financial trouble but if you have a choice between Thai and a middle-eastern airline, particuarly Emirates or Ethihad then opt for those if the prices are simialar. You'll undoubtedly get more bang for your buck
