The worst stupidity is insisting on seeing your passport at a pre-clearance departure gate for a flight to the USA - AFTER you've already cleared US immigration, as if you morphed into a new person while walking out from pre-clearance to the gate. It's as dumb as being asked for a passport in LGA for a flight to IAH.
