As long as I'm not holding up a line and it's not IRROPS chaos I always (politely) push back that the gate agent should accept a Nexus. It's official policy that it should be accepted. Although I always fly with a passport and there's really no reason not to, it's in everyone's interest that AC gets better at accepting Nexus just in case something goes wrong... (forgotten passport in the desk drawer, emergency trip when a passport's out for renewal, last-minute re-routing, etc)
