I always check in online and never go to a kiosk. So when I get to the gate (international or transborder), I always just go to the desk and ask, "do you need to verify my documents?" They pretty much always do. Lately I have seen them bounce people out of the boarding line (even zone 1) if they haven't done so, so I figure better safe than sorry.
