In general (and there are always exceptions) they will call those who for whatever reason haven’t had their passports checked by an AC agent or machine at some point in the airport. That’s usually those who checked in online or who are connecting from a different airline.

Checking in at a kiosk is usually fine as it will ask to scan your passport. Same as with an agent who will check it. You’ll often see “docs ok” written on the boarding pass once it’s been checked.
