That's not how it worked for me further to my purchase.. A couple of weeks later Alan Boswell emailed me with a 7 digit code and the following instructions:-

How to use your Avios voucher code online
  1. You will need your 7 digit unique Avios voucher code from above
  2. Go to www.aviosvouchers.com
  3. If you are already a British Airways Executive Club Member, please complete the member details so that your Avios can be added to your British Airways Executive Club account. If you are not already a member, then you will need to join the British Airways Executive Club in order to collect Avios. Links to join the British Airways Executive Club can be found here
  4. Enter your unique Avios voucher code
  5. Click the "Submit" button to proceed
