Is this doable? What are my chances of making that flight? If my luggage is checked in all the way, that should help, right?
Welcome to FlyerTalk!

Are you originating from SYD or are you connecting from somewhere else? I'm confused about VA's role in the ticket.

2 hours and 15 minutes to make a separate-ticket connection is possible -- there shouldn't be a ton of international flight arrivals at that hour -- but risky. If you misconnect, UA will probably put you on their next flight to SJD anyway, even though they're not technically required to.
