If that was going to be a regular occurrence and was unavoidable when flying DL that alone would be a lot of reason for me to stick with AS. Those kinds of charges add up pretty quickly and start overwhelming other reasons.

Conversely this is the kind of thing that would steer me to DL. 5 hours of my life every trip I can't get back + paying for gas + the general inconvenience of flying in relatively far away? Frankly I can buy Alaska MP miles for those unicorn trips if it gets down to it.

Lately I've been flying more DL than AS because DL has been showering miles and AMEX has been showering points, and "free" generally beats "cough up some cash", but the worm sometimes turns (AS or even WN often has better value on routes I travel). I've gotten to the point where elite status doesn't feel very meaningful to me as opposed to just going where pricing takes me, and as a poster on FT puts it (Herb687, I think), "loyalty is for chumps". Mostly I'm loyal to my own wallet (I also don't travel enough to hit a 75k/Platinum status on ANY airline, and the 50k/Gold level is at best a 50-50 proposition every year). What does your wallet say?
