Depends on airline, flights remaining on ticket, and what airline ticket stock the current ticket is on. DL will do this with any Skyteam carrier ticket, as long as remaining flights are all on Skyteam matketed and operated carriers. They will also do same with close partners (ie LATAM).

They can also takeover another carrier ticket on DoD. Ie I missed a UA ticket DTW-IAD-LAX when my ICN-DTW was late. Agent simply booked me on DL nonstop using the UA ticket for payment.

For simplicity most carriers will do this at minimum if both tickets are on their own stock and all flights are operated by them.
