One thing I've seem to have noticed, is credit card companies dislike when people just barely squeak by spending limits to get a bonus. Ie - they aren't interested in just your $4k spend in 3 months, but do that to limit payouts. Perhaps the real spending limit for a free guest is well under $75k, but not advertised.
How did you notice that?
One thing I have noticed is that people (okay, I) dislike it when there are undisclosed criteria for benefits. Makes it hard to plan and creates the impression of unequal treatment. This does not work well in an era where any special targeted benefits are immediately hit the blogs or Social Media.
Then again, perhaps this is hardwired in Amex’ DNA … *cough* Centurion card *cough*
