I never ever expect an upgrade , not even right now as Titanium. If I am truly eyeballing a certain room type , I will book it or use a SNA. That being said , at nicer properties , I am pretty much 100% of the time upgraded from the room category I have originally booked into. As you have mentioned you stay mostly with JW and Westin with the occasional Marriott and Autograph, I think you will find yourself upgraded more often as a platinum in Asia, Australia , and Europe. That has been my experience when I was a plat. I almost make it a point to avoid heavy status mid level Marriott properties in big American cities for the last 4 years simply because there’s really no upgrades , lounges are just awful, and breakfasts are dismal. I always keep my expectations real, when at a moxy or aloft for one night only , I really only truly need just a room for a few hours. The cost of staying there is relatively economical , I really don’t care about an upgrade at those type of properties. And when I pay for a base room at an RC or Edition, they are rather more expensive and I have never been not upgraded.
I am almost always seeing my room upgraded in app prior to check in , usually day of. Sometimes a day or two before. But never at an Edition (yet). But definitely at properties you stay often in.
I can’t offer you any tips or tricks to get upgraded. Some like to subscribe to the “if you don’t ask, you don’t receive” method and reach out via the chat button. For me , what always has worked is to just check in , be cordial and say good day and ask how the front desk agent is doing. If I’m not upgraded prior , usually right then and there the agent finds me something great and upgrades me.
edit to add: I have never had an upgrade show in app being rescinded , only ever had a better upgrade from the initial upgrade shown in app
thanks for taking the time to write out your thoughts and be very detailed!
what would be a heavy status mid level Marriott property? I probably think of that as Mariott, Westin, Sheraton, etc.
is JW considered upper tier? The rooms/hotel/facilities are usually pretty nice!
Thanks!
