Definitely don't do it online. Call in. By the letter of the law, I think you would lose it but AS might be willing to issue a new code as long as the companion code isn't expired. That said, this policy was lenient in the peak COVID era, but maybe not so much now. In any case, the code would still expire at its original time; you can't reset the clock.

I believe they will issue a new companion certificate with the original expiration date in that case (pretty sure I did that once years ago), but it’s a courtesy not required by the public terms and conditions. If you just keep the ticket but change the reservation, you’ll be sure the certificate will stay attached. I certainly would not cancel online; only have a phone agent do it after confirming that the certificate will be reissued.
So I called and canceled the tickets. Was told the CP would be reissued. I am still waiting for the new code.
During the pandemic I had a 200off discount expired, but AS gave me a new code with another year to use. I forgot it was automatic or I requested it. I'll see how CP is handled nowaday.
