In any event there's no such thing as "linking" PNR's however you can call to get the others seated next to you in MCE for no charge on the outbound. But on the return if you're in PE then you would not be able to get them seated in MCE for no charge, since you're in a different cabin.

And you could book everyone on the same PNR then call to upgrade just yourself to PE on the return segment, however they would need to split the PNR at that point as you can't have different pax in different classes of service on the same PNR. So it wouldn't really accomplish much.
These were all my fears. I'm hoping someone has a trick. As I care more about my family's well being than mine, I might just need to book all coach and hope the SWUs clear then explore the upgrade to PE (which will likely not be cheap down the road). Worst case, I sit in coach and suck it up while my family lives the good life.
