I'll use 4 SWUs on wife and son round trip and 1 SWU on my outbound. The above was selected because the price premium for PE on the return is only $500, where it's over $2,000 on the outbound.

My issue/concerns are, if I book my family (no status, just AA Exec CC) on a separate PNR and waitlist them for SWU, they'll have no effective status. I'll have a different PNR as you can't really upgrade just a single passenger to PE at time of booking. So I guess the questions are:

1. Can I call AA and have the two PNRs linked despite different class of service on one leg?
2. Can I book all three of us in main on a PNR and then just call and upgrade one leg for one person
I seem to recall in the past there were issues with separate PNR upgrade requests for SWUs, where the other PNR would not inherit your elite status for the upgrade waitlist (unlike domestic comp upgrades, where another PNR can inherit your status). Not sure if this is still the case.

In any event there's no such thing as "linking" PNR's however you can call to get the others seated next to you in MCE for no charge on the outbound. But on the return if you're in PE then you would not be able to get them seated in MCE for no charge, since you're in a different cabin.

And you could book everyone on the same PNR then call to upgrade just yourself to PE on the return segment, however they would need to split the PNR at that point as you can't have different pax in different classes of service on the same PNR. So it wouldn't really accomplish much.
