One thing to be aware of. Not all the sunset villas can see the sunset! We stayed in 327 which faces due south. That does have the advantage of getting morning, afternoon and evening sun on the deck - and in the end we decided that we rather liked it. But you cannot actually see the sun directly from about 60mins before the sunset. So if the sunset is THE thing, well worth having a look at the map and being clear which villas you would want.

Apart from the direction of view, the layout of the sunrise and sunset villas is pretty much identical. The sunrise ones are looking towards the Mandhoo spa and corner of the other island, but it must be almost 500m across the water, so not at all close. You get very decent sunset views from the Rangali Bar, and if you were saving those upgrade prices, you could even afford a few drinks!

Ive looked back and forth from both sides of the island quite a few times to compare

The sunset side seems to face open sea and the water is a different color

The sunrise side has significantly prettier water color and you see the other vilas across the water. Agree they are sooo far you can’t actually see people and to me, their presence adds to the “vibe”. Since you don’t actually see a true sunset, lol I have no idea why someone would pay a premium to be on the sunset side where to my opinion it’s a worse view.

you can clearly see on Apple Maps satellite view the color difference in the water and where the deep sea begins.
