It's ridiculous, but BA don't seem to allow combining an Avios segment with any other. Given that avoid availability is usually nil with connecting partner flights,
Its a serious limitation on the use of Avios other than in single sector trips.
A bit of IT expertise would make it possible, but then that's too much to expect from BA.
