It's not possible, and even if it were, it wouldn't help, because the fares aren't combinable.
Some destinations are extremely asymmetrical -- for example, it might be that a one-way flight outbound is reasonable and the return is cheap, or vice versa, so it's worth pricing things out before losing all hope. But, in general, you're probably out of luck.
Consider a miles + copay upgrade for one direction and PlusPoints in the other. That's not a superb use of miles, admittedly, but it's better than paying $4000 on a one-way ticket to use your "free" upgrade...
