Source: I once sat next to a couple and they requested bassient. The 1st one FA tried was broken or something, so they have to try the 2nd one on the plane.
They follow the aircraft and if defective, they are tagged and replaced at the next Canadian station. BSCT's as they are known are built into the credenza ahead of 1D/1G on the B787 and B777.
There are no BSCT's on narrow bodied aircraft.
