You actually think the error message is that sophisticated? I used 3 RUCs late last year before the online upgrade feature, and had to get DL to re-issue ticket for the upgrade and check-in. The error message was simply go to a kiosk to check-in; even a kiosk would not work without human intervention.
It actually is fairly sophisticated if that is the word you want to use, in the last few months a misapplied upgrade results in a check in message that says something about needing to have a ticket issued.
