Originally we were booked on LAX - NRT on United but recently United dropped that flight to do LAX - HND. We were rebooked on LAX-SFO-NRT which wasn't terrible but on a 777-200. I really wanted to do 787. I called and asked to be booked on the direct flight from LAX - HND and it's now done.
Note that if you add a new flight, as suggested, you'll likely be able to keep your LAX-HND flight without repricing, but you'll pay additional miles for HND-ITM. If you change from LAX-HND to LAX-ITM instead, then you will get repriced, but if there is still award space available at the same level you originally booked, it might work in your favor.
