Ok thats interesting thanks, not used Avis in the US before, am preferred, so good to know on the upgrade front.

I have made a reservation for 2 days with Avis in Vegas in a 'Large (E)' and have another with Avis and one with Hertz for my main roadtrip to collect on the Sunday afternoon.

Knowing I can check in the app in advance is great as means I can see what they've assigned me and if not what I want can perhaps change it as you did! Not that I need a Suburban haha

If not already, I would absolutely recommend you enrol in the Avis Preferred scheme and make sure you download the App (both UK and US versions). Even as a base 'Preferred' member, more often than not I've received a one-class upgrade on lower grade vehicles. Using the App(s) on my most recent trips has meant a seamless experience in being allocated you vehicle, checking it's age and mileage (to answer your above question), swapping it out for something different and bypassing the counter so that you can just jump in and drive to the exit barrier.

As for LAS, on my last visit there in November, as soon as my cell phone got a signal I checked the App(s) and found out that I'd been allocated a one-class upgrade to L (Premium SUV). App showed I was to receive Ford Expedition XL with 3700 miles on it. Was happy enough but thought I'd check the complimentary swaps whilst I waited for our luggage and up popped 4 Chevy Suburban, all band new with no more than 5 miles on the clock. It was pick your colour time, so chose a white one as were heading out into the desert. Once in the aisles, most of the new Chevy's were lined up together and were 'Premier' trim- so pretty reasonable spec.
