Happened to me once at HKG with RJ: We were living in Sweden at that time (so we had multiple credit cards and changed cards multiple times when a better card popped into the market and we booked a fifth freedom flight with RJ ex HKG to BKK. Everything was fine until we were at the check in counter at HKG - the ground staff asked us for the credit card we used to book the flight. It was booked like months before and we couldn't even remember which card we used to book the tickets with. The card holder is one of the travellers so we didn't think it was an issue at all. Anyway we actually cancelled that card after we purchased the tickets and fortunately we had a picture of the card and the check-in agent accepted and issued us the boarding passes to BKK.
They said it's for fraud prevention - it made sense if the card holder is not one of the pax in the itinerary.
