I had an issue a few weeks ago that will likely stop me from selecting these seats in the future. I was flying LAX to EWR on a 772. 1A was blocked until check in time and it opened up. I was already in first but in the middle section. I selected 1A and checked in—all fine. At the gate, they paged me—which I thought was strange. The agent apologized and said the seat was supposed to be held for crew rest and I should not have been able to select it at check in. She gave me a boarding pass for a different seat in first. I could see 1A from my new seat. No one ever sat in 1A the whole flight. Not sure if this is a one off situation—but wanted to share my experience.
