I had the opposite experience last week. I checked in for an international flight on the AA Web site, and it would not complete check-in. I tried again using the app, and it asked to optically scan my passport. Once I did that, it completed check-in and gave me my mobile boarding passes.

What's the difference? Heck if i know, but I guess it is a good reason to try the other method if one fails.
