Greg at Frequentmiler has a decent write up on this. There are some 'sweet spots' but none of them start or end in the U.S.

Delta D1 Sweet Spots

Barring an award sale (please bring some back!) I think my strategy is going to be booking on other air lines and using the Skypesos for positioning flights.
