What is the point of scanning passport with phone for online check-in?

I don’t quite understand. I wanted to check in for international flight, and the American Airlines app wanted me to scan my passport. That didn’t work, neither with a camera, nor with the NFC scan, and entering the data manually give me a warning message that I would have to pass by the check-in counter. Since I did not want to pass by the check-in counter, simply to spend less time at the airport, I checked in through the website. Got a boarding pass. So what’s the deal? The only difference is that I don’t get a mobile boarding pass, but one that I save on my phone as PDF. My passport will be looked at in any case at the departure gate. So what is the point?
