Won't agree that it was clearly wrong advice.

Miles expired a month prior to the ticket being cancelled. When the miles was reinstated, they promptly expired 6 months after the initial expiry date (not the ticket cancellation date); as per their 6 month extension policy. Burnt them within the short 2 weeks window that the miles appeared. So there is no loophole here.
