In my recent UA-IAD-UA midfield CBP-TSA experience (not sure if LAX TBIT MSC is the same), transit TSA there did not ask for ID/BP at all. Presumably CBP would only let people through if they have an onward flight. There lies the problem. CBP knew where I was headed next based on the API the airline provided. But if she's terminating one ticket and beginning another, it may or may not work...
