I just checked in online for BOS-Mad flight on Saturday. There is no square QR code like was provided when I checked in Mad-CDG(separate tickets). The downloaded, what they call "boarding card"(no option for apple wallet) has a rectangular code in the upper right hand corner, but I'm not sure it's a scannable QR code. I'm pretty sure this is what I had a few years ago and did not work at security. I was sent back to check in to get a physical boarding pass. I will go to check in tomorrow to be safe.
That's the regular paper BP, and the rectangular code you mentioned is in the standard format for codes found on paper BPs for IB, BA and AA. So if you print it out it will work when the BP is scanned at the airport. Have a look at the post I made 5 mins ago re. paper BPs vs digital BPs.
