Edit: Did try to cancel the segment right after looking so not sure if there was a time limit before changes can be made?
That agent was wrong. You need to hang up and call again (HUCA). Calling the Partner Line during PT business hours sometimes yields better results.
In another thread it is claimed that you can do this yourself online so an agent who cannot do it is very poorly trained. I have done this myself many times by calling in. It is such a common thing that all agents should be able to handle it but for some reason the quality of AS agents varies from mostly fantastic to sometimes abysmal.
Saying there is no availability to rebook one direction means the agent is trying to do it the wrong way. They can hold the return segment and cancel the outbound but it is a different procedure. Call the Partner Line and make sure you are talking to the partner desk before wasting your time. If you don't initially get the partner desk tell them you have had trouble with changing an international partner reservation and politely request they transfer you to the partner desk.
