Adding some ff miles to an existing account is to me better than all ff miles/points/avios into a new orphan account that will have a small balance that will never be used.
Just noting that one potential way to 'rescue' such orphaned miles from BA (or QF) would be to transfer miles
in, e.g from generic reward programs such as Amex or Chase, if available to the OP. Presumably one would wait until a desired award became available before doing such a top-up transfer.
