It's clearly possible and I can guarantee you that, indeed, the immense majority of people would never notice. It reminds me a story some years ago at Sofitel Philadelphia. I am Accor/ALL Diamond (may be I was Plat at that time because Diamond status did not exist). At check-in the agent gives me the drink voucher and said "you can have a glass of Champagne on us at the bar with this". So this is what I asked at the bar, the bar tender said OK. He bring me the glass and at the 1st sip, I recognized it was Prosecco. I told him "this is not Champagne but Prosecco". He was really puzzled and acknowledged it was indeed Prosecco but he asked me "how did you know". I just answered "I'm French, I know the difference". For him, Champagne is just a sparkling wine among others with very few noticeable differences.
