You may be able to ask them to short check your bags to Sri Lanka which you can collect and.then skip the last leg, however I am not sure if this will create any future problems for you with that airline.
As for the visa it's smart to get one as I would almost be they would assume your final destination is India and therefore check if you have a valid entry visa at check in.
