Luggage that's not "normal" size can't always take the same route as the other bags. That's why Alaska's baggage guarantee policy of 20 minutes or less includes this piece of information:
Offer is not valid for checked items delivered to the oddsize/oversize baggage claim area (e.g. checked pets, golf clubs, skis, surfboards, assistive devices, firearms).
Of course, in your case you still qualified for the extra miles of the guarantee since your other bags were also late. But the disclaimer above is an indicator that certain items have a greater chance of taking extra time.
But you got your skis, so no it is definitely not the 'end of the world'. Enjoy your first world vacation, along with some bonus miles for the late bags (I hope)!
