Thanks for pointing this out. I didn't thought they may check this when going to Sri Lanka. Would they check this on the onward flight to Sri Lanka already or on the return flight to Sri Lanka?
To be on the safe side I'll get a visa with longer validity period or a transit visa. Or will they ask for "proof" that I'll exit India within 48 hours (in case of transit visa)? I could exit India by land within 48 hours (which is permitted).

I would still be wary of being denied check in.
Yes, I booked a multi-city ticket, with the 2 last flights as separate "trips" (this first 2 flights are one trip with stop over), but they are all in one booking. I did this to let them tag the baggage to the end destination of the next trip.
The only thing what worries me is that there is "just" a 7 hour period until the departure of the next trip. Airline / staff / baggage check employers may see this as a stopover and check it all the way through back to India for my "convenience".
I thought it would be in my favor to not have a valid visa, because then they will for sure not let me board the last flight. But you convinced me to have a valid Indian visa on return Will it then work to skip the last flight and have my baggage?
