In any case, I received a prompt response from the GM who is addressing my concerns. Hopefully this was just a one-off for two stays, both during the same week, and they have taken steps to keep this from happening again. Beyond check-in everything was great. So yes, I could move on and stay elsewhere indefinitely but there are aspects I still like about the hotel. Great breakfast, good lounge, central location, good rooms post-renovation.
I wanted to follow up and make clear that the hotel did me right in the end (refunded the early check in fee on first stay and some points to make up for the check in delay on second stay). I do agree with the other posters on the lounge. Excellent lounge with excellent service. I caught them on a bad night on NYE and had the unfortunate luck of two check-in issues in a row. But all was great in stay three. I'd also recommend the lounge (vs downstairs) in the evenings and downstairs for the more complete breakfast.
