I was in this same situation for a stay in Dec. They confirmed I would be refunded the points but charged the cash rate if I cancelled - which at peak season was running $3500/night.

I did some research and AIG TravelGuard covered this as a penalty incurred after cancellation and not many other travel insurance companies would. If you are concerned I would check out their policy.
