YVR is an Air Canada hub, which means you have a lot of direct options where you need to go without even bothering to think of WestJet. YYC isn't. So we are stuck with WestJet or connecting. Connections add time and risk of misconnecting, IRROPS, etc. WestJet's continued dominance at YYC just resulted in major regional cuts to AC's operations here.
