Wow, good catch. Looking back through my personal statements, I realized that Capital One codes Suica reloads as merchandise, while Amex codes them as cable and internet communications (which don't seem to earn a bonus on any Amex cards). Updated lead post accordingly.
Suica codes as passenger railways on IHG Premier, which earns 5x IHG points. It also codes as such on Citi MCs, which comes in handy when there's a 5x bonus on Prestige/Premier.
I like to think of it as JR East compensating us for categorizing all their in-station restaurants as "general merchandise."
