The whole 'independent contractor' employees loophole is just a way to get exploited or for corners to be cut--no insurance, offloaded liability, etc. It's not really a sustainable business process since you're using up a resource in the process--people.
Just because a lot of people may not like the concept, I don't know that I would label it as unsustainable .An awful lot of people prefer the model of working when you want. Somehow, it still isn't an overly profitable business yet for a lot of these companies. I doubt adding in benefits and whatnot would be sustainable.
I'm a firm believer that a *component* of the labor shortage is these gig services. Why work food, retail, hospitality, etc. dealing with all of the undesirable duties that come along with them, when you can drive around whenever you want?
