They might be still in a generous mood from the massive cancellations a few weeks ago when they opted to reimburse people's reasonable expenses due to the significant negative publicity.
Yeah, I figured the rental car option is an ask and pray situation (hopefully they take care of us, but likely not). But it sounds like the refund of points doesn't happen. Sounds like I'll have to fight for them as well. Crazy. The return flight (that only got me partway home) was 15,936 points.

This has happened to me twice, I recently referenced it MCO-(BWI)-ISP, the other time while stranded MCI-MDW-ISP I took another airline to LGA.
You maybe able to push for a refund of the points but its not going to happen systematically
Ugh, interesting. Thanks for sharing.
One thing I noticed is that after the cancelation, my flight got split into three "flights."
The departure "Flight 1" was two flights (MCI - DEN - SJD)
The return "Flight 2" was SJD - MDW
The 2nd return "Flight 3" was MDW - MCI (which I then canceled).
So maybe all the points were "used" by "Flight 2?"

Any points used will also be refunded - if you cancel.
Didn't happen that way unfortunately.
Some portion of the 15,936 points for the return should have been refunded. 100%? 50%? 25%? IDK, but 0 sure isn't acceptable.

When I look at my receipt, it now shows 1/28 SJD to MDW (doesn't even indicate that it was booked through to MCI).
I want to start working on a request for possible rental car / gas / meal reimbursement, but our friend (who got the rental car) was hospitalized right after returning the car (and was still there overnight). We're pretty worried about him. Thanks,
Kyle
