There's no doubt that basic economy is pretty basic, but is UA intentionally trying to make it miserable?

I have lifetime gold status on UA, but despite that, I have declined to darken the door of any aeroplane with "UA" printed on it for close to seven years now.
So my information might be out of date, but I feel like asking, why would the basic experience not be horrible, when even the business class and first class are horrible?
ETA - some of my friends have told me that UA has actually improved since the long dark days of yesteryear. That may be, but I waited long enough for that to happen, and it never did while I was still willing to fly on them.
