The US CBP machines fail in the same way, its something related to your prints not appearing on the scanner if your fingers are too dry or oily. Last April we had an agonizing time in DTW waiting in the foreigners queue where every bloody try to scan fingerprints of the people ahead of us took multiple attempts. The CBP agents had the same finder cream and tissues at hand to help the pax.
Pre pandemic China had installed similar systems at all arrivals points... once I had captured my prints once (in 2018) I didn't need to during the next entry, a waiving of the thermal paper slip confirming the capture was enough.
Not looking foward to Europe introducing a similar biometric capturing/verification scheme next year... the immigration lines will be a mess.
