Yeah, I don't get this. I've never seen either line been long (even when the bag check line has stretched out the door on the departures level), but the as with your experience when I flew yesterday morning there were rather more people waiting to go through the CLEAR Process than to just walk up to the TSA agent and hand them your ID. This is an airport where you can easily see both lines simultaneously.
Clear just seems to be such a bad operations model to handle the volume of people they have now at these urban airports. It's just a cumbersome process that takes too long with too many humans involved in making sure you are "clear." There's often 2-3 empty machines and you're waiting for one of the employees to come tell you which one to go to. It should really function more like Global Entry or the security gates in Europe/UK where it's facial recognition automatically. No humans needed.
