Automatic as far as we could tell. We didn't know anything until we landed from the first flight (our friends got the cancelation / rebooked texts; we did not). There weren't any other flights out the night we arrived but we did see earlier ones the next day. So IDK why they put us on the last one out.

Well, that's what they're telling us. I called, and our friends called, and both of us were told that all each of us would get is $5.60 each. <shrug>

There was at least one other earlier option after we looked, but either way that was going to require a hotel stay and would have caused a lot of problems to get in late the next day.
Based on recent experience, getting a hotel, taxi vouchers, etc. is a real pain (*if* we would even get them), so we figured a rental car split between the two couples would be about the same costs and at least get us back nearly a full day earlier.
Is there any way to determine the reason for the cancelation? It's really frustrating airlines don't provide more details! Thanks,
Kyle
