You may well have already completed your stay, but maybe this can be helpful for others. As IggySD said above, it depends what one's priorities are. I'd add in that it also depends how many times one plans to go in and out of the city center. If the plans are to go into the city at the beginning of the day, spending the full day there, then back at night, I think it's ok. But IMO it's not suitable for multiple trips in and out. During my stay last summer, friends summoned me for an impromptu drink in the city and IME I found the property's location a hindrance.

Wish I knew about this 397 bus!

I figured I could catch the airport train into AMS Centraal. Would be nice to have transport to the airport from the hotel
IME, they'll give you a ride to the airport, regardless! They don't ask, but if they did, it's because you need to go to the airport again. If you make a huge fuss or delay a departure for some reason, they might start asking questions, so don't do that. You're supposed to have a ticket (from reception) to ride the shuttle back to the airport, but I was only asked once.

During the afternoon commute, I once found myself on the shuttle with several employees of a local company which seemingly had an agreement with the hotel to take staff to the airport for them. (Schipol is a major train station.) So the driver should be familiar with a variety of reasons. Tangentially, when I bought my multi-day transportation-pass at a tourist desk in the city, the counter staff nudged me towards a certain type that included trains to the airport once they learned I was staying there. While they weren't affiliated with the hotel, it seemed understood that visitors often stay near the airport, given the ratio of rooms in the city core vs. elsewhere.

What's an ist-lest?

Curious what you ended up doing.
