I think NW/DL not having an alliance partner in Japan is one of the problems. NW did look like going to have an alliance with JD (Japan Air Systems) but JD merged with JL.

On positive news, Hawaiian Airlines announced a return to FUK starting April 28.
Flights from KIX to USA are still pretty limited. Most searches push me to travel through Tokyo (or ICN).
