Sometimes when AA isn't a fit it's time to think about flying someone else who meets your schedule better. Aeromexico (SkyTeam) and United have same day flight options, for example. I wouldn't think twice about booking away from AA if they didn't have something that closely resembles a reasonable routing.
The point of me flying AA is to use a flight credit before it turns to dust.
